Saturday, July 17, 2010

ber, claire, edith, huan
知道我没有忘了你们
i'll be waiting to hear stories of breakthrough from you girls!

Monday, July 05, 2010 杀气

You know being here in China, I realise I lose my temper and patience very very easily.

Bad customer service, black faces, apologising yet receiving strings of shanghainese hurled at you, being stepped on, hit by, pushed and not receiving any apologies (or even a look) by your transgressors. 一言难尽
Singaporeans here comfort me by saying: This is China.

So I always feel that some of the China Chinese, I am chinese too by the way, are out to cheat me.

Stuff happened when I wanted to check out of dorm on saturday morning, and I was being mean to accuse indirectly, the management for trying to cheat me of 2 days worth of accommodation fees worth 120RMB.
This morning, Sophia was really nice to accompany me to the front desk and she told me she could feel my 杀气!
Wow, not many people, even my close friends can sense this, and half the time they assume they never seen me gotten angry before...
When the dorm people asked about like am I coming back next semester etc and being nice by letting me in and out of the lift first...I felt so aweful.
Not all China Chinese are as I think.

New Living Translation (©2007)
Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Sometimes I find myself wanting to push, to rush, to even take revenge by elbowing or talking back...
And there are times where I give way, or allow them to cut my queue, give up my seat etc, I hope something strikes them.
I hope they will bring up their kids differently.

迎世博,讲文明
中国人,文明啊文明
It'll take more than a generation to change this, especially when younger generations are sooooo pampered because they are the only child.

Tonight is my last night in dorm
Tonight I did my last laundry in dorm

I am pretty much packed except for the last round of laundry that's drying outside.
I dont have much to throw out either.
Thought some stuff like table lamp, lan cable etc, i should leave it with the Singapore asociation.
So that my juniors who might come to Fudan in future can benefit from it.
Goodbye air-con, goodbye my desk, the only private space that I own.
Goodbye Room 834.

--

I am chionging some of the DVDs that laoda passed to me some time ago.
Watched El bano del PAPA, Wild strawberries and おもひでぽろぽろ for the past 2 days.
They are all great films~! おもひでぽろぽろ is still my personal favourite out of the 3

'Chronos' is playing now as I type this.
Montage at work, seriously, and so scarily.
So queer and breathtaking that I decided to google about it.

Chronos , "An incredible visual-music journey through time", released in 1985, 40 minutes.
Chronos was Ron Fricke, Mark Magidson, Michael Stearns and Alton Walpole's first collaboration.
Chronos is a very positive film showing beauty from around the world. Chronos has the feel of Baraka, yet its content is often more about how the subject is shown/filmed instead of the subject itself. But don't let that put you off, I think Chronos is greatly underrated. The incredible time lapse sequences, concepts and techniques clearly being the seed for Baraka.

Chronos is a greatly overlooked film. Although only 40 minutes in length the content is outstanding. All of the images are of the great things on the planet (with the exception of Dunkirk perhaps). Filmed with great care and consistency. The time lapse scenes are rivaled only by Baraka. The aerial view of the changing tide at Mont-St-Michel is incredible, Michael Stearns choice of music is excellent. The accelerated scenes of humans moving remind you we are just animals. They often become so fast and intense you feel like jumping up and shouting "Stop!", but the journey then ends leaving you gazing at rolling clouds. Perhaps some of the best footage ever of Stonehenge, without the now worrying chain fencing.
The shots inside the buildings are also incredible, particularly the moving beams of sunlight. A must for any Ron Fricke/Baraka fan.
Perhaps a test run for Baraka, but a great film in its own right.

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 slowly saying my goodbyes

I'm half counting down to the days where I'd be back home in Singapore.
I'm starting to pack my stuff, shifting things out, sorting memories.

I know what I'll miss, whom I'll worry.

I am left with visits to Thames Town, a day of Expo and I'd say my goodbyes to this city I call home for the past 5 months.

Saturday, May 29, 2010 Good Morning

The sun rose a couple of minutes ago here in Shanghai.
I haven't turn in for the night/morning.
Horrible sleeping habits; drifting off too far into thoughts.
I could have laid in bed and sleep quite easily, not that I am too preoccupied with thoughts.

Well,
I thought about the following...
1. How's the team handling conference.
2. There's so much of conference that I am going to miss.
3. Sophia's such a dear, enjoy every minute of our conversation, challenging perceptions and perspectives.
4. Edith's competition is in a couple of hours.
5. I really enjoy the fellowship just now with the girls, I hope to bring them closer to God in worship next week. Use me God.
6. 1 kings 19:10-18 running in my head.
7. Do I have to really make what I love into a career?
I enjoy watching dance, but I dont dance. Likewise, I like film, but doesnt mean I have to make one- or force one out. Especially if it's not for the right reasons and motives. Yea, I'm searching still
8. My time here is running out.
9. I'll miss fussa loads; the people I have met, are we going to keep in touch? Somehow?
10. I am not learning/listening from God enough.

bye brain, you need a rest!

Sunday, May 23, 2010 他的理由

It's been a couple of hours already. But I cant seem to settle down...

3:6-8 (Chinese Union Version (Simplified))

Knowledge-hungry

I never really understood why Chinese are so hungry for knowledge, until that day in class where we mentioned about the Cultural Revolution.
I never knew that even when such historical event happened like couple of decades ago, this hunger lingers in generations and generations to come...(That's only but one of the many factors)

I never really understood the need for knowledge; I am a mould from the Education system- study what I'd be tested.
I thank god for this time here in Shanghai, so much time for me to spare that I'm learning so so much more.
It's mostly self- learning about Western art, China history, Film styles...I dont know what's next.
I'm no pro at any of those, but I know I'd never touch them or linger in them if I'm back home.

To bed to bed, another day I'd learn something new.

Saturday, April 03, 2010 Good Friday-Sat-Easter Sunday

Well, I cant believe that I actually did thought of skipping CG for Alice in Wonderland on Good Friday. I know I'll never do that if it's back in Singapore, then why here in Shanghai...
Which, I did went for CG in the end. (cause movie was cancelled)

So I got a book by Mitch Albom called 'have a little faith' while waiting for the bus to arrive. It cost only 10RMB~ haha! I am like into 30+ pages, but I sense a good story coming up.
I tried a new route to Andrew's place today via train, and it's so much more convenient to do transfers with this line. And I get to avoid the crazy human traffic at 人民广场.

I stepped out of 上海科技馆站 and God surprised me with an awesome looking evening sky...too bad I didnt have my camera around to capture a good picture of it.
" You paint the morning sky, with miracles in mind..."

For CG, we watched a movie called ‘Faith Like Potatoes' . Set in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, this story is about a Zambian farmer who leaves his farm in the midst of political unrest and racially charged land reclaims and travels south with his family to start a better life in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. With nothing more than a caravan on a patch of land, and help from his foreman, Simeon Bhengu, the Buchan family struggle to settle in a new country. Faced with ever mounting challenges, hardships and personal turmoil, Angus quickly spirals down into a life consumed by anger, fear and destruction. Based on events in the life of Angus Buchan, the book was adapted for the big screen by award-winning actor and director, Regardt van den Bergh, and weaves together the moving journey of a man who, like his potatoes, grows his faith, unseen until the harvest.

Well, I watched with a much 'skeptical' heart cause the pace of the story was too quick and there wasnt enough details to develop the character. Mostly were made up of the very obvious outward expressions of the actors...That said, I guess the production team had to struggle with squeezing in enough content within the 97mins...

But I would say, the movie did bring me back to alot of head knowledge that I have that I need to review again in my heart.

"Are you ready to be a fool for God?"

please allow me to 'emo' (is it so?) for a moment...
Other things, I guess being misunderstood, being skeptical, being oversensitive, being cynical, being negative are all being human; after all, we are human beings.
Looks like (skeptical, yes) I am, in a sense, human. Feeling and going through these...

It could be a self mechanism that makes you want to defend for yourself while you're in a new environment. In some sort of ways, while defending (with a little reflection on my part), I realised that I am not the nicest of people, not the friendliest of sorts, not the most embracing kind... essentially, a great part of me loves being alone (mentally and physically). And I guess it's also hard to understand this part of me, which I dont myself. In many ways, I am a living contradiction. I know people close to me are often 'victims' to my 自闭ness sometimes, and NOW and THIS really makes me grateful for having you guys being my awesome friends!
Part of me feels like I need to explain myself...but the flesh is weak ya' know
Yet again, the above is me being highly skeptical...ignore me~
I assure you that it's only a rant and I'll get by it soon as I pray for forgiveness and for situation to turn around :)

Isaiah 55:7-9

7 Let the wicked forsake his way
and the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,"
declares the LORD.

9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

And how great God is...that I failed so much in comparison.
Which reminded me of a conversation about love that I had with Yining a couple of days back...(hellos, if you are reading!)

And this holidays, I thank God for God that He has been very personal to me, especially so these few weeks while I am far from home. Lately, I have been waking up thinking I'm in my own bedroom back in Singapore.
Signs of homesickness, maybe?

Monday, March 29, 2010 春游@ 婺源

Spent the weekend at 婺源
Grace, muriel, edith and me at the back of the bus.
We're the sound FX team!

I forgot to pack in my itouch for the 6 hour trip there, and i guess it's a blessing in disguise because i had the time instead to actually get to know edith, prayed over some people in my life and also for myself.
The international youth hostel that we stayed at.
room mates...

some photos of the places we visited...cant remember the names for most :(
the places that we went are very touri-sy...
an example of TTTM (tiong to the max)

really love some of the architectures of the old villages.
pity that the colours are pretty much cool in shades of greys.

dajie serene.hahah...actually she's younger than me.lol

really love this picture!
anyhows, for this trip, i really tried to get pictures of human...haha
I am quite lazy to uplaod all 133 photos that are more presentable out of the 400+ i took these few days.

But one thing is for sure, at the end of this trip, i realised that i am not very much a 'nature' person as i thought i was...or maybe what i see during this trip didnt touch me very much; except the fact that God really made many things and Man tried means and ways to do something to it, like terracing the mountains and digging through it for tunnels. And i thought about what God has for me and am I rejecting or altering anything on my own...

I got to know the FUSSA people alot better during this trip, spoke to people regarding our futures, admired people who really strived hard and achieved alot in life...
Part of me thinks about doing a master degree somewhere in this world for more overseas living experience...hmmz.

Saturday, March 20, 2010 one month in 上海

I kind of regretted not logging factual entries into my blog so here goes...
and all after a month of being here :)

well, I am still very thankful for everyone who took time off their sleep to send me off at the airport, the breakfast we had at yakun, helping me look through my luggage, fearing that it'll be over weight...really appreciate it :D

View from the plane.

It was then I realised I'll be away from home for quite some time...

Shanghai Pudong Airport that is quite dead boring.

Customs was quite a pain cause we kept having to queue.
From the airport, we took a cab down to Fudan's International Dorm at 杨浦区,57武东路
Thinking we might get 'kong' by the cabby (师傅)we asked to go by meter (表)
- thinks bangkok style -

We settled into dorm after the near 45mins jouney by cab.
Settled payment for dorm which amounted to 8420 RMB, got the china telephone line going, bought the internet access card. My first step into independence...at an age of 21, how apt.

First meal in Shanghai was spent at KFC...
Dont really like the pepsi here, it's quite tasteless.
KFC big tub!

By recommendations of the aunty that sold us the sim card, we headed to 吉买盛 to get our daily essentials.
The balloon cart by the road
Cartful of stuff; we have another cart by the way

Bought alot of stuff and was really dead tired after we went back to dorm.
Oh, we took a china tuktuk back with all our barang barang! Scary~

So we woke up a little later, just in time for lunch.
Googled for good food before heading out and it led us to 政民路,which is right behind the dorm
Shops lined up at 政民路
CIAO cafe which we had lunch at.
seat by the street- which is a nice filming location.

So we walked further down and saw this gorgeous building which is part of Fudan Journalism School
Fudan Journalism School
Here's 五角场,which is the like hipper part of the area that i live in
China boy deciding on what ice cream to buy at the Mcdonald kiosk
finally understood what 沃尔玛 is...Walmart.haha
So I had bubble tea...taste pretty awesome, like it's shaken :)

Now this is day 3 and we went roaming around the school compound
复旦老门
and there's some russian plane in the school compound
bicycles are too common and they dont last forever, they get stolen.
this is not plastic like those you see during CNY
手抓饼,looks like roti prata
another entrance of 新闻学院
hot chocolate from starbucks!
miss the one with marshmallows in sydney
and the weather got really cold at night.
I think this is the next day and we arrive at 五角场.
Meaning a pentagonal area...
awesome structure!
and we got hungry again!
the night scene at 五角场...

I cant remember if this is the next day
光华楼 that looks really majestic
very european style walk way
favourite stretch of road

So we kind of travelled out of school compound and neighbourhood
The MRT system of shanghai

and so we arrived to the heart of cosmopolitised shanghai
南京路
上海 art museum
the very awesome egg tart...

Ah this day I remember.
I ventured out to 浦东 for service on my own :)
on board the bus...
on board the train which i have to change like twice...
and then i finally reached 上海科技馆站!
it's a nice place where people fly kites like almost every weekend

oh yes, and it was 元宵节 while i was here.
and fireworks just go off at every corner of the neighbourhood

this is the other day where we went to 七莆路
.
and this other day, it rained...
decided to have korean food and hide from the cold
this other day, i went for cg at 浦东
it was raining again, and i waited out in the cold for the bus.

the flowers at 江湾镇站

my first try of china macs
and so this is 七莆路 that we went for twice in less than a week
the very awesome 生煎包

it's the next weekend and i'm off to meet a singapore sister who's in fudan too

always have to grab a picture here, dont i
she's linghuan

the very awesome 烧烤!i must stay away from it~

And on this day, it snowed!

and i am back to the 路边滩

with the other singaporeans, we went for korean food

this is manying, my pri school mate!
and we got intro-ed to coco~
布丁奶茶 짱!
and 德龙馆’s 小龙包
the evening sky as i walk back to dorm

this other day, lunch's alone again at ajisan
it's super cheap here!
the big field that people play and picnic on
and on this day, we went to 城隍庙

china boys
jeanine is my CS senior interning at an events company in shanghai.
met her at 常熟路 and she brought me to this place
whisk: a getaway for her, where she forgets that she's away from home
and we walked to 淮海路 and towards town...

this other day, i met up with muriel for BSB concert.
it's near to 延安西路站
old school music love!

other shots of school

盗版 is very common here. and police dont even catch...
so i got my share of dvds to watch and learn from...

and aloy came for holiday in china where i had to take stuff from him.
brought him to the supermarket near his hotel to get pocky!
it's all the way at 黄兴路站 and then after i roamed around before going for music practice.
i ended up at 陆家嘴,town

yoshinoya for lunch~awesome curry猪排饭
and then off i went to 外滩,where my digicam died and i whip out my polariod!

i'll be back there again!

so here's my 1 month stay in shanghai and i'll head off for more adventures:D
